Learning to swim is a rite of passage for most children, but it’s more than just a fun activity they can enjoy with their friends on their summer vacation. Swimming could be one of the most crucial skills they develop in their lifetime. In fact, their lives might actually depend on it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • 10 people die from accidental drowning every day; 2 out of those 10 people are children under the age of 14.
  • Overall, one in every five people who drown in the U.S. are children.
  • For every drowning death, five more children are treated in emergency rooms after being submerged in water.

Research by the American Academy of Pediatrics has shown drowning to be the leading cause of injury-related death for kids ages 1 to 4, and that a large number of these deaths occur when children have unexpected access to water.

The AAP recommends that all children learn to swim, and it’s hard to argue with that. So, when to start swimming lessons for your child? Is there such a thing as being “too young” to learn to swim?

Not if you find your child the program right teacher!

At Kennedy Fitness: A Jefferson Health Affiliate, we’re much more than a place to sign up for cross training classes in South Jersey. We offer a wide range of swimming programs in our state-of-the-art fitness centers, from private swim lessons to group swim classes, and, for our youngest students, Infant Swimming Resource.

Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, is a wonderful introduction to water safety and water activity for children from six months to six years old. Our ISR instructors are specially trained, certified, and experienced.  Their sole focus during a session is your child and his or her safety. Instructors provide regular progress evaluations and make sure to educate parents on the skills and techniques their child is learning so they can reinforce the lessons at home.

If you’re still unsure whether ISR is right for your child, feel free to contact our team today to find out more information. Whether you want to register your little one for ISR training or sign up for a piloxing class in South Jersey, Kennedy Fitness strives to meet all your health and wellness needs!
