Whether you’re on a treadmill at our gym in Mt. Laurel or pounding the pavement around the neighborhood, everyone needs a running playlist. Sometimes, it’s the tunes that get you through the last leg of your run. Other times, the right song can get you off to a good pace. If playing with your earbuds seems like a hassle for your next run, consider this: It’s clinically proven that you use less oxygen when you’re listening to music you like. You can literally run faster and longer with the right music.

  1. “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”- The Proclaimers

A bit of a throwback, “I’m Gonna Be” is undeniably catchy and gets you in the right headspace to start running, you might even feel like you could go 1,000 miles.

Before Azealia Banks was infamous on Twitter, she was the rudest female MC in Hip-hop. Likely her most famous track, “212” is high-energy with some of the strongest synths ever recorded, the lyrics are impressively raunchy though, so don’t let your coworkers catch you blasting this one.

One of the best songs to come out of late 2000’s Metal, “This Calling” starts off with a guttural scream and some of the fastest drumming in Metal. Get ready to run your heart out as your feet try to match the pace of the double-bass pedals.

This is your theme, it’s Rocky’s theme, it’ everyone’s theme, Why? Because it’s just that good.

 

  1. “All My Life”- The Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters are International Modern Rock legends, the blaring guitars and up-tempo bass lines, make this a great one for getting through the middle of your run.

 

  1. “Joywave”- Tongues

Synth-pop has never been this energetic. The song starts off with a beat that just won’t quit, perfect for right after you crest the halfway-point of your run.

 

  1. “The Distance”- Cake

A song about a racecar driver that refuses to stop? Perfect for pushing through that wall and into the last part of your run.

When the going gets tough, the tough listen to Michael Jackson. Rich string flourishes, technically precise cowbell hits and Michael himself encouraging you, can get you through just about anything.

Some of the greatest guitars in metal and lyrics about gasoline will fuel you through the last of your run, careful you don’t get whiplash.

Possibly the greatest victory song in all of Hip-hop, this is a slower-BPM song to vibe out to.  cool down and celebrate your run with Biggie.

When you go to make your own playlist, consider the BPM of each song, most runners find that at least 120 BPM is best for the ten-minute-mile pace.
