At Kennedy Fitness: A Jefferson Health Affiliate, we offer a variety of group fitness classes, including Hot Yoga, Pilates Reformer and Zumba, in Cherry Hill and at our six other South Jersey locations.

One of our most popular classes is Tai Chi, which has been described as “meditation in motion.” Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that is characterized by slow, rhythmic and meditative body movements. Today, we wanted to talk about some of the health benefits that you may notice after practicing this martial art. Tai Chi is known to:

Increase Strength

Tai Chi has physical benefits that are comparable to those caused by resistance training and brisk walking. It can strengthen the upper and lower body, as well as the core muscles in the abdomen.

Improve Physical Balance

This practice can significantly improve balance through greater strength, flexibility and overall body control. This is crucial for older adults who are at risk of falls and can comfortably perform this slow-moving, low-impact exercise.

Relieve Stress

This meditative martial art lowers both stress and anxiety. It includes deep breathing and steady movements that slow down the heart and calm the mind. Its intricate movements encourage one to be present in the moment, rather than worry about the past or the future.

Decrease Chronic Pain

Physical activity can provide pain relief, and studies have shown that Tai Chi can relieve chronic headaches and pain from fibromyalgia. Because it is a social martial art and exceptionally gentle on the body, Tai Chi is an ideal choice for those who experience discomfort during other exercises.

Boost Heart Health

Tai Chi can lead to lower blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels. It is also a non-intimidating aerobic exercise for those who are relatively inactive, which may motivate more healthy behavior and activity.

Enhance Sleep

Study participants who practiced Tai Chi for 25 weeks fell asleep quicker, woke up less often and felt better rested than those who did not try out this unique exercise. Additionally, unlike other treatments for insomnia, Tai Chi has no harmful side effects!
